The Great Mural Project
When darkness descends on the old grain storage silos that stand dormant in Saginaw’s Old Town nightlife district,they’re all but invisible. A Saginaw Township resident wants the world to see them. He and a partner are in the late development stages of a $750,000 plan to transform the addled structures into a colossal piece of public art–perhaps the second-largest mural in the country.
Students at SVSU scanned and colored the drawings of children,then incorporated them into mural designs. They also added photographs from east side streets and caricatures drawn by Clyde. The resulting artwork could become iconographic imagery people associate with Saginaw for generations.
Pruitt claims that many people in Saginaw are unaware of Letherer. He marched alongside King during the American Civil Rights Movement,and refused to allow himself to be beaten or booed by bullies because of his disability.
The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge
Locally known as Shiawassee Flats Refuge,it is home to hardwood forests,grasslands,and wetlands. The area is one of the most productive wetland ecosystems in Michigan and is also an important migration stop for waterfowl. The Cass,Flint and Shiawassee Rivers converge at the center of the region.
The wildlife drive opens at sunrise and closes an hour before sunset. You can see deer,sandhill cranes and a variety of other species.
Visitors can view wetlands in the west,and a bayou in the east from Grefe Tower. Kahl hopes to see the rare glossy Ibis. When the sun hits its feathers just right,they appear iridescent. It is often found around large animals such as cattle,horses,and quadrupeds. The birds feed on the insects that are kicked up by these animals.
The Hoyt Library
Jesse Hoyt,a wealthy New York investor in Saginaw timberlands,bequeathed a plot of land and $100,000 for a library to serve the community. The trustees hired Frederick Poole,an architect from Chicago,to design the Hoyt Public Library after consulting several other libraries.
The striking Romanesque structure features limestone and red sandstone trim. The large blocks of limestone were quarried from Bay Port in the Thumb and transported by special railroad lines to East Saginaw. The library was finished in 1890.
It is one of Michigan’s premier genealogy and local history centers. It contains numerous original source materials such as diaries,scrapbooks,business ledgers and photographs. The library is open to the public and has knowledgeable staff to assist with research. The library offers many classes and events.
The Japanese Cultural Center and Tea House
There is a lot to see and do at the Japanese Cultural Center and Tea House located at 527 Ezra Rust Drive. You can take a guided garden and tea house tour or participate in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. You can also just wander the 3-acre strolling garden which is open to the public April through October at no cost.
In 1971,the beautiful garden was opened as a sign of friendship between Saginaw and Tokushima in Japan. It’s one of only a few authentic Japanese Tea Houses in North America and it is treasured as a place of peace,harmony and understanding.

The castle museum in downtown Saginaw is a historic building that tells the story of the area’s rich history. The castle museum features many interesting displays,as well as rooms from different eras that show off various lifestyles. It also houses a library that is open to the public.
