When darkness descends on the old grain storage silos that stand dormant in Saginaw’s Old Town nightlife district,they’re all but invisible. A Saginaw Township resident wants the world to see them. He and a partner are in the late development stages of a $750,000 plan to transform the addled structures into a colossal piece of public art–perhaps the second-largest mural in the country.

Students at SVSU scanned and colored the drawings of children,then incorporated them into mural designs. They also added photographs from east side streets and caricatures drawn by Clyde. The resulting artwork could become iconographic imagery people associate with Saginaw for generations.

Jesse Hoyt,a wealthy New York investor in Saginaw timberlands,bequeathed a plot of land and $100,000 for a library to serve the community. The trustees hired Frederick Poole,an architect from Chicago,to design the Hoyt Public Library after consulting several other libraries.

The striking Romanesque structure features limestone and red sandstone trim. The large blocks of limestone were quarried from Bay Port in the Thumb and transported by special railroad lines to East Saginaw. The library was finished in 1890.

It is one of Michigan’s premier genealogy and local history centers. It contains numerous original source materials such as diaries,scrapbooks,business ledgers and photographs. The library is open to the public and has knowledgeable staff to assist with research. The library offers many classes and events.
